We should participate in all of that which Marja E Taqleed Na’eni has stated
regarding mourning practices for Imam Husein (may peace be upon him), and
uphold them in order to avoid them being forgotten.
9th Shawwal, 1405 Hijri (Lunar Calendar)

Grand Marja E Taqleed Sayed Abul Hasan Isfahani
In the name of Allah, the Exalted.
A person by the name of Mohammad Ridha Tabasi Najafi who was close to
Grand Marja E Taqleed Sayed Abu al-Hasan Isfahani explained that on the day of
Ashura he was in the shoe storage area of the Haram of Hazrate Abbas (may
peace be upon him) when he saw people ask Grand Marja E Taqleed Isfahani
whether it is permissible to strike oneself on the head with a sword in mourning
for Imam Husein (may peace be upon him). Grand Marja E Taqleed Isfahani replied
that it is permissible.

On the condition that the practices are performed in accordance with the rules of Islam, then it is permissible and holds great reward

The ruling of Grnd Marja E Taqleed Hajj Sheikh Abd al-Kareem Ha’eri regarding mourning for Imam Husein (may peace be upon him) is correct and does not require my approval because it was Hazrat Zainab (may peace be upon her) who performed this very same action and caused blood to flow from her own head.

I approve of that which Marja E Taqleed Na’eni has written regarding the
performance of practices in mourning for Imam Husein (may peace be upon him)
and it is a form of protecting our faith. All the various forms of practices are
approved and those who consider themselves to be a believer should perform
them. They are so highly recommended that it is almost obligatory and those
who do not perform them are in danger of losing their faith.

mourning practices such as striking oneself with a blade on the day of Ashura.

The ruling provided by the great Scholars Grand Marja E Taqleed Na’eni and Grand Marja E Taqleed Khoei regarding the various practices performed in mourning for Imam Husein (may peace
be upon him), are correct and performing them is permissible, if not highly
recommended, in fact so highly recommended that it is almost obligatory.

Question: Is it permissible to strike the head with a blade on the day of Ashura?
Answer: On the condition that there is no harm to the body, it is permissible.
